Nobel Laureate at NTHU: Professor Alvin E. Roth
On April 20–21, Nobel Laureate Alvin E. Roth visited the College of Technology Management (CTM) at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). Through a series of lectures and dialogues with Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professor Po-Hsuan Hsu and TSE Chair Professor Tain-Jy Chen, he demonstrated how economics serves as a powerful tool for solving humanity's most complex and sensitive challenges.
Core Themes: Beyond Money
In his keynote, "Markets, Market Design & Medicine," Professor Roth explored his specialty: designing markets for things money cannot buy. By highlighting systems such as school choice and kidney exchange programs, he revealed how economic frameworks can resolve social disputes and provide life-saving solutions through deep humanistic care.
Deep Engagement and Practical Insight
On the afternoon of April 21, the focus shifted toward deeper academic exchange. Chaired by Professor Szu-Wen Chou, Director of the IMBA program, Professor Roth participated in a specialized seminar with faculty and students from both CTM and the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science (TSE). The session offered profound insights into interdisciplinary thinking and the practical application of economic theory in international contexts.
Inspirational Advice for Students
Professor Roth shared a resonant message with the next generation:
"Study hard, but more importantly, find problems that are significant enough to dedicate your life to, and where the process of solving them brings you genuine joy."
The CTM Mission
The event perfectly embodied the core spirit of the College of Technology Management: moving beyond abstract theory to emphasize interdisciplinary practice. Our mission remains clear—to find order in a chaotic world and leverage professional expertise to unlock real-world solutions.
